Seeders – Learn More About It
For garden vegetable growers, seeders are helpful machines that can do the planting work without the painful backbreaking efforts required for the task. The concept of a seeder must have come from a farmer with mechanical abilities. The seeder is an automatic planting machine pushed manually by the user to plant seeds at uniform depth and distance in garden plots. Some models are tractor driven or simply pulled by a lawn mower. Whatever form a seeder has, it has one function, that is to plant seeds.
A typical set-up of a seeder is a mechanized single wheeled contraption with an attached disc designed to penetrate the topsoil, place the seed at a certain depth in the soil and finally cover up the seeds with soil. In vegetable gardening, one has to remember that seeders will fail to work efficiently if the field is not properly prepared. Large clods, compacted and unpulverized soil get in the way of the planting mechanism and the planted seeds may not be covered fully. Poor germination of the seeds might result. The right planting depth will also not be achieved if the garden lacks proper soil preparation. In other words, mechanized planting through seeders go hand in hand with correct farm practices. A poorly prepared soil will not give the farmer good results not only in planting efficiency but also in the other aspects of vegetable gardening. Improperly pulverized means more weeds are more likely to grow faster and the plants will have poor growth due to poor soil aeration.
Some seeders are also equipped with mechanisms that enable them to function as a fertilizer applicator. Although this is not the main function a seeders, this added capability is an added benefit to help the vegetable growers. Owing to the incredible efficiency of these machines, they may not applicable to small garden patches because they are designed for large garden plots. There is not really a problem of planting small garden plots where a spade and some other small manual implements will suffice. Those who have big lawns and large garden areas will surely need seeders especially if they are planning to plan to cultivate large vegetable plots in the not so distant future. Seeders have been used by many vegetable growers for quite sometime now and many old seeders handed down by fathers to their sons can still be seen in the barns of the next generation vegetable farmers.
