Batman: Arkham Asylum

Batman Arkham Asylum

This Game is set in Gotham City (a fictional City) where it stations the Dark Knight, along with the majority of his big tiem foes. The plot kicks off when the Joker attempts to escape from Blackgate Prison, with over 50 of his men, all heavily armed and ready to take out the Mayor, whom they have held hostage, and in doing so set off a large fire. With the help of Commissioner James Gordon calling up the FBI, and SWAT Team, they manage to take the Henchmen down, and hold Joker in custody until Batman arrives to take him, where he is transferred to Arkham Asylum, a medical facility specialised for convicts whom are suspected of suffering from psychiatric issues. It seems that all are happy that Joker is now captured and prevented from causing more mayhem. All that is except Batman, whom is puzzled as to why he submitted so easily. His theory is proven correct when the Joker attacks both the Warden, and Doctor escorting him to his Jail, killing them. Assisting the Joker is Harley Quinn, a former Psychiatrist turned convict that gave Joker the chance to run free once again in the Arkahm Establishment, and releasing his Blackgate Henchmen to take Batman out at all costs. Use a variety of Weapons, and combos to stop Joker, and rescue both Warden Quincy Sharp to restore peace in Arkham Asylum.

I have to say that from the start, I was very skeptical regarding comic hero games, but after someone told me to dwonload the Demo to this game, I did. And boy was my initial views of this one well miscalculated, such that I had to go and get the Game. The amazing detail in each area from the insides of the Prison that can be compared to those in developing Countries, to the Bushes Garden area outsides of Arkham Asylum made me stunned with how much Rocksteady paid attention to the presentation. Even things like a broken Door, the Lockers for workers, the Water flowing in the sewer, and a Radio lying on the floor was hard to overlook.

The thing that certainly got me on the edge of my seat was the amazing gameplay. Using powerful combos such as your fists and feet to take down minor and major foes as well as jumping around and blocking to avoid incoming attacks had me in shock, and even cracking up till this day. You could even switch to pick different Weapons to conquor your quest. The Batarangs are useful in stunning your opponent from a long distance, where you have to get closer to them to take them out, or even use the long Rope to pull them down from a bridge, and limit your chances of getting taken out with their Guns. You can also use other Weapons like the Gel Gun to break through an otherwise unreachable passage, and use it to either distract your Enemies that are hunting for you, or once again take them out on the opposite side when they are not looking.

The AI is above high standard, so your actions certainly do affect how your fellow on screen Characters react to you. Things like taking down a Henchmen will cause Joker on the intercom to insult his men for not paying attention to the wellbeing of their comrades, which will force them to come to the exact place where they were. Even the slightest sound you make from any Weapon you try to throw, and miss, or getting seen for a second or more will force the well built Henchman to take action, and run towards where they think you are to kill you right on the spot, even calling for backup if need be. Other inmates like these mad small creatures with masks on their faces that stop them from speaking (and whom are indeed Human) to jump on you if they sense you are around. Attention to how both the Gameplay, and AI is crucial for players to get ahead in the difficult challenges that awaits them.

The amazing sounds such as the Voices from Characters like Batman whom refused to tolerate anything, and stood for what was right was very impressive. That also includes Joker whom had a crazy attitude of being one step ahead of Batman, and even his comments made me laugh here, and there. The sounds from the Doors opening, to the Gadgets hitting their target sound superb. Even the Soundtrack was very ingaging, and fits different scene scenarios, from in Battle, to moving around casually.

I have got to say that this Game is well worth the effort. Rocksteady have done an amazing job by taking their time to develop a quality DC hero Video Game, and I look forward to the sequel Batman: Arkham City. Without a doubt, I have got to give it a 8/10.
