Burgers In Chicago
Back in the 19th century Chicago had the reputation of being the world’s hog butcher – such was the prevalence of pig farming in the area. While it still claims speciality in this area, it has also widened its offerings to diners.
While previously tourists might only be able to find a good hog roast or joint of gammon, Chicago has now become one of America’s top dining venues. Especially in the last ten years, the Windy City has joined the top US culinary cities such as New York and San Francisco.
Tasty food doesn’t need to be caviar and stuffed quail, and a lot of Chicago’s food reputation is about doing normal food really well. From the now world famous Chicago style pizza to extravagant burgers, Chicago caters for the everyday man but while its history with burgers is linked with its rich pig farming history, beef is now the number one choice to eat with a bun.
Burger fans often find themselves in a pickle trying to pick somewhere to eat, but many begin by heading to Mindy’s HotChocolate on North Damen Avenue. Predominantly a pastry shop, this burger naturally has one of the best buns in town. Add to that seven ounces of the best local beef, lashing of cheese and bacon and homemade garlic relish and you have yourself a top notch burger. Because of the setting, you can finish off your meal with some of the best pastries in town.
Mindy’s HotChocolate isn’t the only gourmet burger in town. David Burke’s Primehouse – found on Rush Street – ages his 10 ounce beef selections for 40 days in a room full of salt tiles from the Himalayas. When ready, the beef is served with bacon mayonnaise, roast shallots and garlic spinach.
Another favourite, especially for locals, is Cortland’s Garage, on Cortland Street. This burger is served with cheese, smoked bacon, fried onions and, for a touch of something a bit different, fresh avocado.
It’s not all about burgers in Chicago, but like their high quality pizza pie that is eaten the world over – and tastes so much better in its hometown – its burgers are starting to gain the same level of credibility and recognition.
For those not wishing to sample the fast food style offerings available, there are many other restaurants and hotels in Chicago that have more varied menus that include meals from all over the world.
