Politics of Pakistan – a Common Man Perspective

Pakistan became an independent state in 1947, when the the the British made their final plans to surrender the “Jewel in the Crown” of their empire. After independence, a debate commenced in Pakistan about the system of government the new nation should adopt. This debate never reached to a fruitful end. A large number of constitutions and a repetitive replacement of military and civil mode of governments were experienced in Pakistan.

Quid-e-Azam, Ayub Khan to Yahya Khan: It was the time where the politics and constitution of Pakistan was a sapling. Both were in hand of so called rulers of Pakistan molding the both in their personal interests. Mode of government was yet to decide. Everything favorite to any of them was the constitution of the Pakistan. Lack of sincerity in ruling the country ended in dividing the nation into two parts. No doubt the dividing of the Pakistan was happened in certain period but the circumstances were not created in a year or two. Unfortunately, our rulers could not evaluate the things timely and a sad incident of dividing of country was happened.

Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, become prime minister of Pakistan soon after dividing of nation. The nation was in shock due the negligence of its rulers but soon recovered under the charismatic leadership of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. He managed the nation by launching a forceful campaign to restore the nation’s self-confidence. The common man gives courage to the Bhutto, which makes him a strong hold on the government. He give the country a constitution acceptable to all parties, introduce the nation as nuclear power but he was interrupted due to his autocratic behaviour and most of the ‘powers’ don’t want to let the strong politics in the country go.

General Zia-ul-Haq: His coup the country in 1977. He got support from some personalities and groups, on the other hand mostly politicians and common man cannot get relief from the government. Mr. Bhutto amongst the other leaders was bowed through force. The nation spent a crucial time during his regime. We fought the other’s fight in shape of Soviet-Afghan war. We gave it name Jihad (holly war) to this fight but the nation is still paying the cost of his policies in shape of today’s part of Pakistan as frontline state in war against terror.

Benazir Bhutto: She became prime minister in election held after death of General Zia-ul-Haq in an airplane crash in 1988. The people of Pakistan give her a warm welcome as they feel a change in the country. Her party won a handsome number of seats but unfortunately the government was not powerful. She was experienced politician but not an experienced ruler, which make a conflictive government. She was unable to handle the situation in the country. It was difficult for her to fight on all fronts due to unavailability of sincere friends around her. In her second term the situation was even worst as she was failed to establish good relationship with the opposition, for which the nation paid the cost.

Nawaz Sharif: During this period, both the ruling PML and Opposition PPP failed miserably to come out with a concrete economic program. He also failed to get the proper relationship with army and opposition. His second regime was again ended with a welcoming of army rules headed by General Pervaiz Musharraf. During Nawaz’s regimes the nation waited for the change in the mind of politician but again they could not get the proper way of fully established system of government even he got the full command over the parliament with a huge mandate. The nation paid the cost of his heavy mandate but not get the relief from these regimes too.

General Pervaiz Musharraf, coup the country after so called confliction on entry to the country. Nation was fed up with the politicians and want change. No doubt he was welcome as saviour. His policies seemed to be fruitful at the start but soon after incident of 9/11 his decisions made the nation annoyed. The end of his popularity was started with the PML-Q’s government. He gave umbrella to all the decision of PML-Q or in other words he was the mastermind of all decisions at that regime.

Pakistan Muslim League-Quid-e-Azam (PML-Q): It was opined the president house led government was the group of all people who want to be in government in any case. Most of them have cases in NAB due to be the allies of previous governments. They surrendered themselves for the sake of government. They have their roots in the two big parties i.e. PPP & PML but formed a new Muslim League with the Quid’s Name. Zafarullah Jamali headed the government but due to certain reasons was replaced to Shuakat Aziz. He was selected as PM without even he was MNA, an event costs to nation held to select him as MNA. The policies were never match to the Pakistani nation. The policies were made for elite but not for those who select those people to be in the top house of government. There certain policies like Lal Masjid, Judiciary case, FATA operation where they didn’t even bother to feel the pulse of nation and in return led them down in upcoming elections.

PPP & PML-N as major part of coalition government becomes the fate of the nation after general election of 2008. They got crises in inheritance but the way they are teasing the common man is never acceptable to any one of Pakistani public except the beneficiaries of this crises. Price hike of fuel and other utilities is going beyond the reach of common man but there is no one who could even bother to rectify these problems. All concerned parties participated in this coalition are still fighting and start blaming each other for the present crises.
