With Fuel Prices on the Rise, Will We See Street Legal Quads?
Rising fuel prices hurt everyone either directly or indirectly. Will we ever see street legal quads mass produced and available somewhere on the level of street bikes? Is there already such thing as a street legal quad? Can a street legal quad really save you money at the gas pump? These are great questions that deserve great answers. Well first off, street legal quads do exist. They are legal, although strictly regulated, in many parts of the world. In the United States in particular, laws can vary greatly from state to state with no real uniformity. I hesitate to refer to a street legal quad as an atv because these road-use versions of atv’s are modified in a manner that makes them impractical, in many ways, to ride off-road.
The street legal quad, in general, features numerous options currently unavailable on your typical, off-road atv. These options usually consist of a headlight, taillight, brake light, turn signals, side mirrors, and a horn. These options are the minimum required to make an off-road vehicle road worthy. However, your standard Kawasaki Bayou or Honda Foreman with blinkers and a horn may not be your best option for road-riding, especially in highway traffic.
A more suitable street legal quad would probably resemble a four wheel street bike. A few obvious requirements would be street compatible tires, suspension designed and adjusted for street riding, an exhaust system that produces noise levels acceptable on city streets at night, and enough power for safe acceleration in traffic. Can Am already produces what appears to be a reverse three wheeler for the road. This vehicle is strikingly similar to a street legal quad, if you add an additional wheel in the rear, of course.
Fuel efficiency, in relation to automobiles, could be superior considering the Can Am Spyder, the street legal trike, can produce anywhere from 25 to 35 miles per gallon depending on the riding style and travel conditions. With less weight than an average automobile, a street legal quad may be the answer to the problem at the pump for many penny piching travelers with an appetite for adventure.
