Phantasy Star Portable 2 is an action RPG that boasts fast real-time combat and deep customization options. Its fiendish monsters big and rich range weapon similar to Monster Hunter, but PSP2′s gameplay is more forthcoming. The game struggles with both quirky AI and a lack of mission variety, but the repetitive nature of missions is less noticeable in multiplayer, where even play them again and again with friends can be a lot of fun. The game opens in Gurhal system three years after the defeat of invading seeds monsters. You are cast as the newest recruit of Little Wing, a mercenary group, pair you with a young girl in the fight to save the universe. Although the plot using simple, cliche themes, your sweet but troubled partner pulls you in as you unravel her tragic story. Interestingly substories also serve to flesh out the cast, providing witty banter while exploring themes of heartbreak and loss. A wide range of skills enliven gameplay and a fun chain system keeps pace by restoring your ability bar every time you strike, so you rarely run out of energy for specific skills. Chain attacks also temporarily increases the strength that gives you a combative edge. An intuitive blocking system allows you to counterattack if you defend the eve of a hit; blocks also reduces the status Addition rate, making it a valuable tactic during boss fights. Enemy elemental types increase tactical depth by challenging you to use the appropriate elemental tools. Ice weapons deal more damage against fire-type opponents, for example. Characters move smoothly as they perform flashy abilities, although they are somewhat coarsely modeled. Arid environments undermine the aesthetic appeal; areas lack textural richness of some floor panels, while unremarkable orchestral themes and noisy attack sounds accompany exploration. Confusing combat voice-overs also impair presentation.
The main story boasts more than 40 hours of gameplay, but the figure doubled if you are inclined to fight secret bosses, complete side quests or surpass the standard level 99 limit. Play multiplayer and searches unlock also replayability while adapting and hard difficulty levels hook you. Although repetitive mission objectives and simplistic puzzles shortchange exploration, offering Phantasy Star Portable 2 enough features to please.
