Top/Best Easter Movies for Kids and Families (2)

1. Movies for little ones…

Tangled 3D & 2D (PG)

This funny but flippant Disney slant on the Rapunzel fairytale has fared well at the cinema so there’s a good chance it’ll still be playing somewhere in your area.

Rio 3D (U)

This lively, colourful eco-conscious animation from the creators of ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Robots’ could be this Easter’s runaway favourite. A shame then that the plot is predictable, the tunes pretty tuneless and the jokes thin on the ground. Still, if the comic plight of a rare macaw that hasn’t learnt to fly and a raft of stunning eye candy rocks your boat, then ‘Rio’ is a very safe bet.

Hop (U)

This bunny-flavoured Easter cash-in is an unexceptional but safe option for kiddies fond of cuddly toys with long ears. A live action/animated production, it centres on EB (voiced by Russell Brand), a young, fluffy bunny with grand aspirations.

The Disney 50 retrospective at BFI Southbank

As part of its year-long celebration of Disney movies, this month the BFI Southbank is screening “Alice in Wonderland” (April 23 & 25), “Cinderella” (April 12 & 17) and “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr Toad”, (April 9 & 16), a rarely seen Disney cartoon combining elements of “The Wind in the Willows” and “Sleepy Hollow”.

A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures 3D & 2D (U)

If you’re looking for something utterly anodyne and safe for young, easily-startled youngsters, then this frankly dismal eco tale might suffice.

Mars Needs Moms 3D (PG)

From what our critic Tom Huddleston reports, this CG, sci-fi adventure doesn’t hold much water. The life-like animation is of the ‘dead eye’ Robert Zemeckis variety and some of the sets look like something out of ‘Tron’. The plot, meanwhile, revolves around a young lad who learns to love his mum a little more after she is kidnapped by Martians.

Gnomeo & Juliet 3D & 2D (U)

All sprogs should learn about Shakespeare at some time, so why not introduce them to the Bard via this very loose adaptation involving a bunch of garden gnomes? Elton John provides the tunes. It’s been out a while – so most screenings are likely to be in 2D.

Winnie the Pooh (U)

That old quintessentially British AA Milne favourite is about to hit our screens in a brand new traditionally animated adventure. But wait! Is that an American accent we can hear? Sacre bleu! Whatever your thoughts, this film is still going to be wooing a billion kiddies this Easter.

2. Movies for early teens…

I Am Number Four (12A)

Britain’s own action teen heart throb Alex Pettyfer plays the last remaining Earth-bound member of a kindly alien race in this ‘Twilight’-like sci-fi actioner. Not much cop, but, hey, his fans can always coo over Pettyfer’s pretty face. It’s been out a while, so it will only be showing here and there as weekend matinees.

Arthur (12A)

The unavoidable Russell Brand plays a spoiled rich kid whose billion dollar inheritance is in jeopardy if he marries the girl of his dreams. We can’t say we’re enamoured by the look of Brand’s frightfully plucky performance from the trailer. But then we weren’t that enamoured of Dudley Moore’s original portrayal either. Some ‘moderate language and sex and drug references’ will mean those under 12 won’t be able to see it without an adult.

3. Movies for kids who like scares…

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (12A)

Anyone who complained that the previous episode in the ‘Harry Potter’ saga felt too much like scene-setting for the final showdown will be equally disappointed…

Beastly (12A)

In a vague nod to ‘Eraserhead”s Pinhead, UK action pin-up Alex Pettyfer is given a chic ‘n’ shabby makeover for this contemporary slant on ‘Beauty and the Beast’. Word around the campfire is ‘not good’.
