SteelSeries Merc Stealth Gaming Keyboard
Steelseries Merc Stealth Gaming Keyboard – Under The Hood
This article is an, outline of the Steelseries Merc Stealth gaming keyboard and what you can expect if you are contemplating purchasing one as a first time buyer or to replace or upgrade your current unit.
Firstly it should be said that the Steelseries Merc Stealth is a dedicated gaming keyboard, the reason for this is the key layout which not the same as standard keyboards, so if you intend to do a lot of typing or office work on your computer as well as using it as a gaming keyboard then this particular model is probably not for you.
The key placings will take a little while to get used to on the Merc Stealth, and during the learning process you may most likely expect your overall game performance to be reduced somewhat, this is only to be expected however, and once mastered it is highly likely your gameplay will be improved especially if you like to play World of Warcraft, for which this keyboard is apparently well suited.
This model has non-mechanical keys which give excellent tactile feel, but utilizes a heavy-duty membrane beneath the keys which the makers claim will be good for up to ten million key presses, so there should be no reliability problems if these claims are correct.
There are thirty four dedicated gaming ‘terrain’ keys on the Merc Stealth which allows for easy character movement during a game, these are situated on the left side and are angled to make long periods of play possible without fatigue.
Such is the design and operation of the Merc’s keys, screen ghosting is not problem with up to seven simultaneous presses allowed.
Z engine software is used for easy drag and drop macro editing and there are 125 pre listed profiles
which should save lengthy set up times, all the keys can be individually programmed.
There is backlighting on this particular model, with three colors and four intensity levels for the user to choose from.
The usual media controls are available and are single touch.
Dual USB ports are provided together with sockets for headphones and microphones, connections are gold-plate.
Some users who have taken delivery of this product have given it bad reviews, but the majority of these views concerned items damaged or with parts falling off in transit ,and as such are not really critiscisms of the product’s operation, others have commented on inadequate customer support, this can sometimes be an annoying problem for the user, and it is difficult to defend poor customer service especially when the product is, on the whole pretty good, but this is outside the scope of this short article.
The production of the Merc Stealth was taken over by the Steelseries company some time ago, but at present production is continuing and is likely to do so for some time while the product is still selling in sufficient numbers, and this is despite the fact that the company have other similar products in their range and indeed, their latest model, the Shift has not long been released onto the market, and it is set to become another bestseller.
