Game Podunk’s 2009 Holiday Shopping Guide: PC

Written by Podunker:The Liztress

The holidays are near and you’re still stumped about what gift to get the gamer on your list. Or maybe you haven’t decided what you want Santa to leave under your tree. Whether you own a console and rather have a computer game or are strictly into WASD movement, it can still be hard to choose one or two games from the many great games released.

While most PC games are also released for the PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xboox 360; they normally offer a different experience than their console counterparts. This games offer the ability to modify your gaming experience or play other people’s mods. There are also games that are only available for the PC. Here is a guide to five of the PC version’s games, ones that stand out from the console ones and ones only for the PC.

1. Dragon Age: Origins – $49.99 – Considered by many to be the best RPG of the year, particularly in its PC iteration, BioWare is back with an epic story in which your actions really do impact the progression of events, giving it enormous replay value.

2. Tales of Monkey Island – $34.99 for 5 Chapters-Set years after Escape from Monkey Island, Guybrush Threepwood, Mighty Pirate is back in an all new episodic adventure, and one of the best point-and-clicks of recent history. You will find yourself chuckling away, even if this is your first pirating adventure, as you battle a Voodoo Pox and puzzle your way out of hilarious situations.

3. The Sims 3 – $49.99- Ever since the first Sims game was released, many people spent hours of their lives customizing a Sim, designing a house, fulfilling all Sims’ needs, and oddly enough inventive ways to murder the Sims. The latest addition to the series introduces the living neighborhood, meaning your neighbors will live and die without your intervention (no more ageless NPCs!). With the recent release of the first expansion pack, you may be able to find this as low as $25. Just make sure you have plenty of time to have it suck away from your life.

4. Tropico 3 – $39.99-If only being able to control one person at a time isn’t enough, Tropico 3 allows you to become El Presidente of the Caribbean island Tropico. It is here that you take charge in 15 missions and reenact historical events or create your own. Who knew a “Castro” sim could be so fun?

5. Torchlight – Created by the designers of Fate and the two Diablo games comes Torchlight. Currently only available as a digital download, this action RPG is perfect for fans of the genre. The soundtrack and art are stunning but the storyline falls a little flat for some.

My Honorable Mentions:

Aion
Batman: AA
Risen
Left 4 Dead 2
East India Company
