Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Association jointly obtained the film rights in 2008. It is currently in post-production stage and is schedule to release in August this year. The movie boasts of impressive star cast including Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Hank Azaria and Sofia Vergara with voice over of Jonathan Winters, Katy Perry, Jeff Foxworthy, Paul Reubens. The film is directed by Raja Gosnell and is distributed by Columbia Pictures. The film is set in the Middle Ages, where the evil wizard Gargamel (portrayed by Hank Azaria) discovers the Smurfs village and chases them to fulfill his nefarious plans. The Smurfs come to know of his devious plan and scatter, but one among them known as Clumsy Smurf (voiced by Anton Yelchin) wanders into the forbidden grotto and other Smurfs also follow the suit. On the eve of Blue moon, an occult power within the grotto transports them into present day Central Park in New York. A married couple (played by Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays) give them shelter and help them find their way back to the village before Gargamel finds them. The film essays a unique bond between the Smurfs and the humans. The animation and graphics of this movie are a visual delight. The movie will be releases in multiple formats including the 3D.
